Waterfowl have long been an obsession of mine. Ducks, Geese, Herons, Egrets, Spoonbills, you name it. Combine waterfowl and photography and I really am obsessed.

"The C&O Canal, Places and Stories" was held in November 2010, at The Art League Gallery located in the Torpedo Factory Arts Center, in Alexandria, VA. The show is comprised photographs along the historic C&O Canal. Most of the images are printed in wide, panoramic, format. This format provides a unique means of capturing the canal structures and places in photographs.

This is a bit of a catch-all category and is a somewhat random collection.

Around the turn of the century the fancy breeding plumage of egrets was in high demand by the fashion industry. Several species of egrets were nearly driven to extinction by plume-hunters for the trade in feathers for ladies hats. Exotic feathers were in very high demand making the trade in feathers very profitable. Thankfully, hunting laws and changes in fashion trends have put a damper on the exotic feather trade.

“Fashion’s Flight” celebrates fashion that is the egret.

In May, 2010, I took my first (hopefully not last) trip to Yellowstone National Park. Yellowstone is about landscapes, thermal features and wildlife.

Panoramic images are wide and narrow. This is an uncommon format for photography which prefers the more rectangular format. However, many subjects are just not well suited for the rectangle.

I really love black and white images and I first learned photography in black and white. There is no better subject for monochrome than waterfalls.

I find that flowers are easily overdone as a subject. It is hard to make an image of a flower that is not similar to so many other photographs of flowers. Like the farmer's market, I tend to approach flowers in mass. Rather than individual "portraits", I like the complicated, busy, subject-less masses.

Washington DC is truly blessed with Tidal Basin cherry trees. The season is short and the visitors are thick, but it is well worth it.

I really love photographing farmer's markets. My photographs are not the typical market images. I like to get upclose with the produce. The images are unusual in that they lack a single simple subject making most of these images almost abstract.
